St Josephs GAA Notes 17/10/2021

Junior Championship Quarter Final:

St Josephs 3-05 St Lomans Mullingar 0-17

A very wholehearted display in Ballynacargy on Sunday just failed to claim the spoils against St Lomans in the Championship Quarter final. So near and yet so far as we rattled in three second half goals which had our opponents almost counted out but not quite as the town side recovered late on to win by three points. St Josephs had a patchy first half where we trailed by 0-8 to 0-3 at half time but the second half was very exciting especially as the goals started to flow. The Ballynacargy pitch was in fine order though a very swirling wind played havoc at times with both sides shooting efforts. St Lomans were first off the mark inside a minute but we responded well through a point from Mikey Lynam in the 3rd minute. Points in the 5th and 7th minutes pushed Lomans two in front before Ros Elliffes score from a mark left the minimum between the sides. St Lomans scored their fourth point in the 11th minute and led by 0-4 to 0-2 at the first water break. Dean Slevins point in the 17th minute left one between the teams but St Lomans pulled 0-6 to 0-3 ahead after 20 minutes with a point from play and a free. The final ten minutes of the half saw St Lomans add on two more points to lead by five at half time. The second half started with neither side troubling the scoreboard in the opening minutes and when scoring did resume in the 5th minute it was Lomans who added to their tally. The moved 0-10 to 0-3 ahead in the 7th minute as things looked to be slipping away from us but then the game took a dramatic swing in our direction. A fine move involving up to eight players saw Wayne Mc Cormack fire home a well taken goal in the 8th minute to give us hope. Remarkably in the next passage of play we scored another goal as St Josephs gained possession and centre half back Pearse Weir Norris reacted quicker than Stephen Gallagher in the St Lomans goal to grab our second green flag in as many minutes. 2-03 to 0-10 with 10 minutes gone in the second half. Game on! Things got even better in the 12th minute when Dean Slevin fired home from an acute angle to put us in front by 3-03 to 0-10. St Lomans were rocked at this stage but they settled with points in the 13th and 15th minutes to level the game at the second water break. We moved ahead through a Mikey Lynam point in the 23rd minute only to be pegged back in the following attack. Dean Slevin’s point in the 25th minute put us 3-5 to 0-13 in front but again St Lomans responded to level again within a minute. The town side moved ahead in the 28th minute and doubled their lead a minute later as the game head into added time. St Lomans settled the issue with a late point in the third minute of added time as they won by a margin of three points.

Under 11’s and 10’s excel in Caulry Tournament:

There have been a number of blitzes and tournaments in recent weeks for Under 7’s to 11’s at different venues but they are all coming to a conclusion as the days shorten into winter. On Saturday 16th October, St Josephs Under 11’s and 10’s participated in the Larry Nugent Memorial event hosted by Caulry GAA. The Under 11’s reached the Cup final and were unlucky to lose out to Moate All whites in the final. The Under 10’s won out the Shield competition defeating Moate’s team in that grade. Well done to all our underage teams and the mentors who have put in a huge amount of effort during the season.
