St Josephs GAA Notes 10/10/2021

Junior Championship Quarter Final V St Lomans:

After five group games we now know our fate as we have been drawn to play St Lomans Mullingar’s second team in the Junior football championship Quarter final which is due to be played on Sunday 17th October in Ballynacargy at 11.30am. The town side have had an impressive run in their section just losing once in five games and it will be a difficult task to take them down next weekend. St Josephs have had very few games against St Lomans in the Junior Championship down through the years though we did play them last year and prior to that it was back in 2007. In the encounter last season we lost out by 3-8 to 1-17 in a very well contested game played in Shandonagh. That game in 2020 was heading our direction until a late flurry of scores propelled St Lomans through and after that they reached the Junior Championship final. We are in decent shape going into this match despite what might be termed two poor results in our final group games. If we click, then St Josephs have a great opportunity to reach the Semi final. Back in 2002, we won our first ever Trophy against St Lomans in the Junior Cup. That win marked the start of a very successful few years which culminated in a Championship win and football at Intermediate level in the mid 2000’s for a couple of seasons. One win can change mindsets and the opportunity is there next week so go and grab it. Best of luck to the lads next Sunday and we are certain that a large cohort of support will be there to cheer on the team.

Ladies Junior team’s good win:

Well done to the St Josephs Ladies Junior team who completed their group stages of the JFC with a well deserved win over Shandonagh by 4-12 to 1-06 on Sunday in Caulry. Not sure if the ladies can qualify for the semi final as two wins and two losses from four games may not be enough but it was a great display.

Annual General Meeting:

St Josephs GAA plan to hold our AGM on Friday 19th November in the Community Centre at 8-00pm. This is a provisional date only and will be firmed up upon in the next week or so.

Next Lotto Draw 17th October:

The next Lotto draw is down for 8-00pm on Sunday 17th October in the Community Centre for a Jackpot of €7300. After next weekend’s draw we plan to go back to holding draws in the two local pubs namely Ryans and The Beech Tree on every second Sunday. This of course is on the assumption that the withdrawal of covid restrictions continues apace.

Give Respect, Get Respect.

St Josephs GAA is part of the GAA’s Give Respect, Get Respect Initiative which is designed to foster a more positive environment for all of our members both on an off the field of play especially for young players but also for players who represent the club at all grades. It is imperative that we uphold the best possible standards at all times and in that regard we will be looking at different parts of the programme over the next number of weeks. This week we look at the area of managing the sideline at our games. The main points of this are that in the event of any person, other than a player, behaving in an unsporting manner or using foul language it is recommended that: • The matter is brought to the attention of their club representative • The representative reminds the person concerned of his/her responsibilities • Where unacceptable behaviour continues, the person may be requested to leave the grounds. The club representatives in this area are the Senior and Minor Chairperson, Senior and Minor Secretary and Childrens Officer. We ask all who attend our game to be conscience of their behaviour. By all means be passionate and encourage but if you cannot abide by some basic rules of behaviour then stay at home.
