Under 13 Division 2 Shield Final:

St Josephs 4-05 Tubberclair 2-13

The Division 2 Shield final at Tubberclair this evening saw our 13 team who really excelled in a very tight contest which ebbed and flowed throughout lose out by two points after a terrific game. The team has improved with every outing and were very unlucky to come out on the wrong side of this game though the margins were very slim indeed. St Josephs really had the goal scoring touch today and three second half goals looked to be enough to swing the result our way only for the home side to hit over two late points to nail down the win. The game was played in slippy conditions under lights at the well appointed venue and it was the home side who struck first with a goal early on. St Josephs hit back with a point and it was tit for tat as we soon levelled matters at 1-2 each with a good goal through,James Birmingham.Tubberclair gradually got ahead in the opening half and we kept in touch to trail by 1-4 to 1-8 at half time. We got an ideal start to the second half with a goal which brought the gap to a solitary point. Though Tubberclair got the next point, it was St Josephs who then took the lead as Evan Maloney flicked in our third goal as we moved one ahead by 3-4 to 1-9. The lads tails were up now but we could not stretch out the lead. Tubberclair got level and we then moved one ahead once more. Both sides were giving it everything at this stage and at the second half water break the teams remained level at 3-5 to 1-11. Tubberclair looked to have made a decisive break soon after when a long ball deceived Christopher Keegan in goals moving them three ahead. St Josephs though were not deterred and hit back almost immediately when Mark Monaghan goaled from close range to level the game again. Both sides had chances to move ahead but in the end two points close to the finish saw the home side take the spoils by that narrow margin. Great credit to all our players for a fine performance and to the team mentors for their great work which has seen this age group improve tremendously.
