Junior Championship Continues:
St Josephs lost out to Castletown Finea Coole Whitehall in the second round of the Junior Football Championship by a 3-11 to 0-12 margin at Lakepoint park on Saturday 21st August. There wasn’t much between the sides early on but goals win games and it was our opponents who hit form in that regard with three in the first half to run up a 3-4 to 0-6 half time lead. We dominated the third quarter and at the second water break trailed by 0-10 to 3-5 but we couldn’t get close enough on the evening and trailed by eight at the finish. There wasn’t much wrong with our performance but CFCW were clinical with their goal chances and that is what counted on the day. Next up we face neighbours Ballinagore on Sunday 5th September at 11-30am in Rosemount. Both sides have a win and a loss from the opening two games so a win here for either of us would leave the road to the Quarter finals more open in what is shaping up to be a very tight championship. Though we are close neighbours, it has been many years since we faced one another in the Championship. The last meeting dates back to 2006 when we met in the opening round of the Intermediate Championship at Castletown Geoghegan. Ballinagore emerged narrow winners that day by 0-9 to 1-5. It should be equally as close next weekend. The game is all ticket with each club allocated 100 tickets. Details of the purchasing arrangements are on our social media channels.
Successful week at Underage level:
Three games, Three wins meant a successful week for our Underage teams during the week with wins at Under 19,13 and 17 level. First up were the Under 19’s who faced Kilbeggan Shamrocks at St James Park on Wednesday 25th August. Having won and lost a game in the competition, a win was required to guarantee a semi final spot and the lads duly delivered in what turned out to be a one sided encounter by 4-20 to 1-1. The first quarter was very even as we held a narrow 0-5 to 1-0 lead but the scores started to flow regularly after that and in the end it was a very useful win though the margin was totally unexpected. The Under 13’s made the short trip to Tyrrellspass on Friday 27th August to play the semi final of the Division 2 Shield. Our Under 13 team had been a tad unlucky with their results but on Friday everything clicked as they won by 6-15 to 3-06. A few weeks earlier, Tyrrellspass had won by a point so it was very pleasing to overturn that result. St Josephs will play Tubberclair in the final on 8th September in Tubberclair. Finally, the Under 17’s put together a fine display on Sunday 29th August defeating St Marys Rochfortbridge by 2-16 to 2-04 at Rochfortbridge. The groundwork to this win was courtesy of a fine first half display where we led by 2-08 to 0-2 at half time. St Marys tried hard to come back into the game but we maintained our first half advantage to record a superb win. Next up will be a semi final against the winners of Caulry or Killucan. Finally, well done to the St Josephs Ladies Under 15’s who reached the final of this years Feile losing out in the end to St Lomans. The girls topped their group at Caulry GAA on Saturday winning all four games. They were too strong for Shandonagh in the semi final but unfortunately came up against a very strong St Lomans outfit in the Feile final.
