St Josephs GAA Notes (20 June 2021)

Under 15’s lose out in County Final:

Springfield was the venue on Monday 14th June where we faced Multyfarnham in the long delayed Under 15 final from 2020. Two evenly matched teams lined out in near perfect conditions but it was Multyfarnham who took the spoils winning by 4-7 to 1-8 after a hugely entertaining encounter. It’s great to get to a final but disappointing to lose it and congratulations to Multy on their win but it certainly could have went our way. The damaging period came after the first water break where Multy had a dominant phase where they went from a point up to score 3-1 in a seven minute phase which ultimately proved a bridge too far. There was little to separate the sides early on as Joseph Cusack and Jamie Mc Donnell got our opening points in a tight opening quarter where both teams were somewhat rusty. The second quarter as mentioned previously did the damage as we shipped scores in a few minutes which left us 3-4 to 0-2 down with 25 minutes gone in the opening half. Thomas Conlon grabbed a badly needed goal in the 26th minute and this was followed by Eanna Rabbitte kicking a fine point which helped matters nicely but we trailed by 1-3 to 3-4 at half time. St Josephs started the second half well with successive points from Joseph Cusac and Noah Mc Donnell to leave us back into it at 1-5 to 3-4. Multy were under some sustained pressure and they lost their full back to a second booking which left us a man up and certainly gave out lads a boost. However, Multyfarnham hit back with two points to restore the half time margin as the teams retired for the second water break. St Josephs piled on the pressure in the final quarter and further points from Jamie Mc Donnell and Josh Gannon left scores at 1-7 to 3-6 with ten minutes remaining. We had the majority of play but could not break down a resolute Multy defence where everyone funnelled back into their own half. Also a few chances went astray where the margin could have been eliminated. The nearest to a goal as Eoin Conlons point four minutes from time which whizzed over the cross bar. The final score of the game fell to Multy who hit us on the break with a goal late on to win by a margin of eight at the finish. Hard luck to the lads who gave a great display and at the finish Pat Collins from the host club Mullingar Shamrocks presented the winners with the Championship Shield.

Juniors win first league game.

St Josephs made a hugely positive start to this seasons league with a narrow but well deserved win over Mullingar Shamrocks by 1-17 to 1-15 at Springfield on Wednesday 16th June. This really was a game of contrasting fortunes as Mullingar led by ten points at half time on a score of 1-12 to 1-2. It wasn’t that there was much difference in general play but it was our first game and we were very rusty in the opening half. Not sure what was said at half time but the transformation was spectacular as St Josephs roared out of the traps in the second half scoring ten successive points to level matters by the 12th minute of the second half. It was a seriously impressive period of play from the men in green and gold. Mullingar did regain the initiative briefly up to the water break with three points in a row but it was a blip as St Josephs dominated the final quarter with five unanswered points to win by two. A narrow margin which perhaps should have been more based on the second half performance. Next up is a fixture against St Marys Rochfortbridge on Friday 25th June in Rochfortbridge at 8-00pm.
