Junior Football Championship
St Josephs 5-16
Delvin 1-10
St Josephs completed a championship double over Delvin in our third game in this years Junior football championship with a comprehensive 18 point win in Killucan on Sunday 11 August 2019.
This win guarantee’s us a spot in the Quarter finals and this indeed is progress as it gives us a place in the knock out stages for the second time in three seasons. Our final group game will be against Ballycomoyle on Monday 19th August with the winners topping the group. We hit the ground running in this match and 2-6 to 0-3 in front after the opening fifteen minutes with the two green flags coming from Wayne Mc Cormack and Niall Moran. Two goals from Ross Elliffe in the second quarter saw us carve out a 4-9 to 1-6 lead at the break. Our forward play in the opening half was very good with many fine points from the boot of Jordan Mc Donnell,Dean Slevin and Andy Scally all very lively. The start of the second half killed off the game as we hit 1-3 in the first four minutes to move 5-12 to 1-6 in front with Jordan Mc Donnell getting our fifth goal. We switched off somewhat after moving well ahead and allowed Delvin to gain a foothold in the game as they scored the next two points and forced Andrew Meares to pull off a couple of good saves which may have yielded goals. But we did add four more points which left us well ahead at the finish in what was a good win. The margin could have been more as we had two first half goals disallowed for square ball infringement. Overall, this was a positive display where we converted the vast bulk of our scoring opportunities. At midfield we held a distinct edge throughout and our defence did well in what was an open game. The one negative was we switched off after moving 5-12 to 1-6 ahead and did not score for the following 15 minutes. With due respect to our opponents but this would be fatal against stronger opposition.
